Historical Fast Facts about Plano

  • In the area which now contains Plano, in the 1840s, settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee started visiting and staying here.
  • During this time, American Indians also occupied the territory leading to skirmishes between them and the settlers
  • In 1946, a mill and gristmill business was started by a merchant called William Foreman whose enterprise served to attract an influx of fresh settlers in the area
  • The first mail service was established in 1850 and Foreman’s House was used as an unofficial post. 
  • During the 1850s, some of the names proposed for the city of Plano included Fillmore and Foreman but the chosen name was Plano which means plain in Spanish.
  • The chief trade in the area was associated with cattle farming and livestock rearing and soon, people discovered the city’s rich black soil was perfect for agriculture.
  • New settlers from the South and mechanised North arrived at Plano as well as Texas and Houston railroads were constructed in this area during the 1870s
  • Plano also became the first train station entering Colin County through the southern direction
